Here’s what we remember about Mrs. Johnston

From SchoolGirl57:

I had a longstanding relationship with Mrs. Johnston. When some teachers would grow tired of my inattentiveness but couldn’t quite justify sending me yet again to talk to Miss Gaillard, they would instead send me to the library to write a special paper. It was no punishment, and I spent many happy hours scribbling away at one of the long wooden tables as Mrs. Johnston did whatever she usually did.

The librarian and I weren’t exactly buddies, however, and I was surprised when I later learned that, in concert with Mrs. Baughan and a couple of other teachers, she had taken it upon herself to write a lot of letters on my behalf to various universities, making sure I had a chance to go on to college in spite of the fact that I had never really thought about this and it wasn’t something that particularly interested my parents, who were convinced that I never finished anything I started and so would certainly not stay the course in higher education. I’m sure what she did for me she did for others as well, and we all say “thank you.”
