Call To Order
- Meeting called to order by President Gwendolyn B. Welch.
- The invocation was given by Lyord Watson.
Approvals
- Judge Vowell moved the approval of the consent agenda which will now include committee reports and the Director's report. Georgia Blair seconded the motion, which carried.
Public Voices
- Lyord Watson invited Library Board members to attend the Community Investment Network's 2012 conference. Gwendolyn B. Guster Welch presented Mr. Watson with a certificate of appreciation for his work leading the Library Board Grant/Award review team.
Branch Update
- North Birmingham will reopen to the public in the next few weeks.
- Administration will meet with Hoskins Architecture to review renovation plans on Monday, October 8, 2012.
Board Grant/Award
- Haruyo Miyagawa was presented the "I AM BPL" award and was nominated by Augustus Jones. Ms. Miyagawa will receive $25.00 and a certificate of recognition.
- Hunter Murphy was presented with the "Special" award and was nominated by Janine Langston and Jean Shanks. Mr. Murphy received $25.00 and a certificate of recognition.
- Felita Hawkins of East Lake Library and Yolanda Hardy of Smithfield Library were presented with the People Enriching Lives (P.E.L.) Grant. Each of them received $100.00 for their library program as well as certificates of recognition.
Young Professionals Update, Kelsey Bates
- Kelsey Bates is BPL's staff liaison to the Young Professionals group. The Library held a Young Professionals Social on Thursday, September 20, 2012. Forty-five potential members were in attendance. The deadline for applications is Sunday, September 30, 2012. Currently there have been sixty-nine nominees and twenty-one applications.
Public Relations, Chanda Temple
- Chanda Temple gave an overview of the Public Relations department and upcoming events.
Nicole King, City Attorney
- Nell Allen moved that the Library Board enter into executive session. Georgia Blair seconded the motion, which carried.
New Business
- Georgia Blair moved to approve two $25.00 gift cards (to be deducted from the Trustee Fund) be donated to Staff Day 2012. Gwendolyn Amamoo seconded the motion, which carried.
Comments
- Judge Vowell stated that he was happy with the efficiency of the meeting.
- Dora Sims thanked all working on the Young Professionals group and also thanked Chanda Temple for her Public Relations work. Ms. Sims is excited about the trustee funded grant/award program. Also, please remember to contribute $10.00 that will be used for the Freedom to Read renewal.
- Samuel Rumore enjoyed the Eat Drink Read Write festivities.
- Georgia Blair attended the North Avondale screening of Barber of Birmingham. Ms. Blair also distributed a copy of the summons that her parents were sent for her to attend juvenile court for her part in the Children's Crusade.
- Gwendolyn B. Guster Welch thanked Ms. Blair for her contribution to the Children's Crusade and also thanked staff for improvements made on grant writing skills. Ms. Welch also encouraged Library Board members to contribute to the Trustee Fund.
