Parker's first assignment was as the 2nd grade teacher at the new Slater
school in January, 1888. The next fall he advanced to teaching the 3rd and
4th grades.
During the summer of 1889, Parker returned home to Ohio to visit family.
Before returning to Birmingham—and at the insistence of his mother—became
engaged to and married his high school sweetheart, Mary Anderson.
