Ulen, Loretta Claudine

At the time the scrapbook in this collection was created (1912-1916) Loretta Claudine Ulen was a student at Central High School in Birmingham, Alabama. She was most likely the daughter of Cora C. Ulen, a widow who worked as a dental assistant. The Ulens lived at 3601 Twelfth Avenue, North. This collection contains one scrapbook, three theater programs, and one advertisement for Cable-Burton Piano Company. The scrapbook contains material relating to Loretta ("Lola") Ulen's school days, including photographs of classmates, clippings, notes from classmates, invitations, calling cards, and swatches from dresses worn on special occasions. This scrapbook is a good example of the type often kept by young women in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

Ullman, Samuel
From the Summit of Years, Fourscore, Youth, and Related Material

Samuel Ullman was born in Germany in 1840 and immigrated with his family to the United States in 1852. They settled in Mississippi where nine years later Samuel Ullman served in the Confederate Army. He later married, started a business, and began what became a pattern of civic and religious activism that continued the rest of his life. In 1884, Ullman and his family moved to Birmingham, where he became a progressive leader during the city’s formative years. He served in numerous civic and community capacities, including eighteen years of service on the Birmingham Board of Education. Samuel Ullman died in Birmingham in 1924. Throughout his life, but particularly during his retirement, Ullman pursued an avocation as a poet. While in his seventies he wrote a poetic essay entitled "Youth" which became a favorite of General Douglas MacArthur. The General displayed a framed copy of the poem in his Tokyo office during the post-World War II administration of Japan. Through General MacArthur’s influence, "Youth" gained popularity in Japan. This collection includes a Japanese translation of From the Summit of Years and Fourscore; an undated reprint of the poem "Youth"; a videocassette of festivities in Japan in association with the publication of Summit and Fourscore in Japanese; a copy of Aunt Sister's Book containing letters from Ullman; and a few miscellaneous items of related material.

Young Men’s Business Club Research Files, 1946-1980

The Young Men’s Business Club was established in Birmingham, Alabama in 1946 and modeled on a similar organization in New Orleans, Louisiana. The founders of the Birmingham YMBC hoped to see their group develop into a more progressive rival to the Birmingham Chamber of Commerce. With a membership primarily made up of businessmen and attorneys, YMBC sponsored speakers at its luncheon meetings, presented an annual Man of the Year award, and supported progressive causes including the reapportionment of Alabama legislative districts. Members of YMBC helped lead the campaign to change Birmingham’s form of government from a three-member commission to a mayor and council. This collection contains oral history interviews, clippings, minutes of meetings, correspondence, notes, and other material relating to the Young Men’s Business Club gathered by Tony Underwood while he was a graduate student at Samford University in Birmingham, Alabama. The collection also contains drafts of papers on the history of YMBC written by Underwood. The subject files primarily contain material relating to YMBC and the Civil Rights Movement, tax reform, the implementation of daylight savings time, and the consolidation of the City of Birmingham with adjoining suburbs.
