Ada Long Creative Writing Workshop
This is a three week summer workshop for high school students interested in creative writing. Students are accepted by application with a mid-February deadline.
Alabama Writers Conclave
This is an annual three-day workshop on creative writing. Check the web site for registration information.
Desert Island Supply Company
The Desert Island Supply Co. (DISCO) is a nonprofit writing center based in historic Woodrow Hall, in the heart of the Woodlawn commercial district on the east side of Birmingham, Alabama. The organization is run by passionate volunteers who believe in the power of storytelling and are dedicated to providing Birmingham students, ages 6-18, with more opportunities to strengthen their writing skills, intensify their intellectual habits, shape their own futures and positively affect their communities. Flow Tactics Teen Poetry Workshop
Flow Tactics is a poetry workshop for middle and high school age teens which meets on the first Saturdays of the month from 2;00 to 4:00 p.m. at the downtown Birmingham Public Library. The workshop is led by Real Life Poets, a non-profit creative writing group. Contact John Paul Taylor for more information: johnpaul@reallifepoets.org.
Gifts of a Wordsmith Adult Poetry Workshop
Gifts of a Wordsmith, a poetry workshop for adults, meets on the first Tuesday of the month from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the downtown Birmingham Public Library. Jefferson State Community College - Community Education
Offers a variety of non-credit adult classes including writing, publishing, photography, crafts, and languages.
Samford After Sundown
Samford After Sundown non-credit programs offer opportunities for personal and professional development administered through Samford University\'s Metro Programs. Classes are offered in a broad array of areas, including art, music, and languages.
Women Writing for (a) Change - Birmingham Chapter
Each semester, there are a limited number of spaces open in a creative writing/process class for women seeking to deepen their voices as writers and connect to a diverse community of other writing women.
Writers' Groups
Alabama Media Professionals
This group of freelance writers and media professionals meets monthly. Check the website for time and location and to make reservations.
Alabama Writers' Forum
promotes and facilitates the practice of literary arts through its services to writers and the general public. With individual and corporate associates statewide, the Forum represents the diverse voices of today's writing talent. The Forum is a partnership program of the Alabama State Council on the Arts and is located at 410 North Hull Street in Old Alabama Town in Montgomery, Alabama.
Heart of Dixie Romance Writers
Heart of Dixie Chapter 51 is an affiliated chapter of Romance Writers of America©. HOD usually meets on the second Saturday of each month at the Cullman Museum in Cullman, Alabama.
Magic City Writers
The group's focus is science fiction and fantasy.
Southern Breeze
Southern Breeze is the regional chaper of The Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators. SCBWI is the only international organization to offer a variety of services to people who write, illustrate, or share a vital interest in children’s literature. SCBWI acts as a network for the exchange of knowledge between writers, illustrators, editors, publishers, agents, librarians, educators, booksellers and others involved with literature for young people.
Southern Magic
The Birmingham chapter of the Romance Writers of America.
Women Writing for (a) Change - Birmingham Chapters
Each semester, there are a limited number of spaces open in a creative writing/process class for women seeking to deepen their voices as writers and connect to a diverse community of other writing women.
Write Club
Write Club is a monthly forum for local amateur writers to meet and discuss their work. The goal of Write Club is to inspire and encourage literary involvement in the community by providing an environment in which local authors can network, share their writing and offer each other moral support and constructive criticism.
