The Alabama Association of Nonprofits (AAN) was founded in 1996 under its former name of the Nonprofit Resource Center of Alabama as a collaborative effort of Alabama Power Company, the United Way of Central Alabama and the Community Foundation of Greater Birmingham. The mission of AAN is a simple one – to strengthen the capacity of Alabama's nonprofit sector through professional development, advocacy and management support, all resulting in better communities and a stronger Alabama.
Alabama law requires that charitable organizations and institutions that solicit contributions in or from this state register with the Attorney General's Office.

Alabama Giving is an association of grantmaking organizations that works to increase, promote, and encourage philanthropy by helping its members share knowledge, collaborate and advocate to improve conditions in Alabama.

The Alabama Small Business Development Center Network is funded and designed to assist for-profit small businesses and is not able to invest a significant amount of time working with non-profit organizations. However, network counselors are able to provide some guidance, and have provided some basic information on the website. Users may find the Internet links helpful in finding information on fundraising, management, starting a non-profit business, and other topics of interest to non-profit information seekers.

AFP of Alabama is an affiliate chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP) which is the professional association of individuals and organizations that generate philanthropic support for a wide variety of charitable institutions. Founded in 1960, AFP advances philanthropy through its more than 30,000 members in 230 chapters throughout the world. Alabama is home to four chapters of the AFP: The Alabama Chapter based in Birmingham, the Central Alabama Chapter based in Montgomery, the Gulf Coast Alabama Chapter based in Mobile and the North Alabama Chapter based in Huntsville. These AFP Chapters promote philanthropy in their local communities, provide education and networking opportunities for fundraising professionals and support the fundraising profession both nationally and locally.
