AIDS Alabama offers several housing options for people living with HIV/AIDS and their families as well as people who are homeless regardless of their HIV status. We believe that stable, affordable housing is a vital component in halting the spread of HIV.
Family Care ministry provides safe and stable homes to help struggling mothers and their dependent children to get back on their feet. This program provides a mother and her children transitional housing while she gains or maintains employment, saves money, receives counseling, and learns life skills such as budgeting and healthy parenting techniques. Depending on their commitment to the program, mothers may stay for up to one year.
Brother Bryan Mission is the oldest rescue mission in Birmingham, founded in 1940. Men come to BBM at the lowest point in their lives. They need help meeting their most basic needs. Once accepted into one of our programs, they begin to learn how much God loves them and wants to restore them to a meaningful and productive life.
Changed Lives Christian Center (CLCC) is a Christ-centered ministry managed by and in partnership with The Foundry Ministries, that offers transitional housing for men who desire to break the cycle of homelessness in their own lives, whether from the economic recession or other personal issues such as substance abuse and/or mental illness.

State and Local Information Sources

The Continuum of Care is a program designed to provide housing and supportive services on a long-term basis for homeless persons who have a serious mental illness, chronic problems with alcohol and/or drugs, or with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS or related diseases), or any combination of those disabilities, who are living in places not intended for human habitation (e.g. streets) or in an emergency shelter. The program allows for a variety of housing choices, and a range of supportive services funded by other sources, in response to the needs of the hard-to-reach homeless population with disabilities.

One Roof began over 25 years ago as Metropolitan Birmingham Services for the Homeless (MBSH), a networking group for agencies providing services to persons experiencing homelessness. One Roof now serves as Central Alabama’s coordinating body that the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) terms the Homeless Continuum of Care. One Roof also continues to advocate for the homeless, provide internal and external education and serve as a networking group.

The HUD website provides links to local and state agencies in Alabama that are engaged in activities to assist the homeless.

The site provides state-level estimates of individuals and families experiencing homelessness, based on:

1) Community point-in-time counts conducted on a given night in January 2020, as reported by Continuums of Care to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.

2) Children and youth who experienced homelessness at any point during the 2018-2019 school year, as reported by public schools to the U.S. Department of Education.
